Improve your business by only focusing on the #criticalfew actions that matter
With so many things to focus on in your:
- Business; with staff, customers, suppliers, investors, your www and your facilities,
- Families and friends to stay in contact with, and your
- Self; personally, professionally, spiritually and in your community . . . .
. . . WHICH #criticalfew actions should you spend your limited time on, now, to have the greatest impact to improve your business?
I am a firm believer that we can only change two or three things in a business every six months and have a lasting impact to improve your business. So, we need to choose wisely given how scarce time is. The purpose of the #criticalfew actions is to help you to determine the high pay-off areas that you can address to improve your business over the next six months.
So, if you are a business owner with between 4 and 250 employees; largely doing business to business; maybe professional services, manufacturing or business services then, welcome. You’re probably buried in the exciting but arduous day-to-day business of doing the business with little chance or call to step back and work on the business. Sometimes that feels quite alone, not able to have the level of strategic, celebratory, fearful conversations, that all business owners find themselves having or needing to have. You are either too low on time or funds to hire a mentor and you want a convenient place to test ideas against, rather than a supportive or naysaying friend, family member or staff member. You might even be experiencing some financial, competitive or emotional distress.
[But, if you are a retailer, then we are not going to address the retail consumer much.]
Over my career, I’ve learned from a combination of DuPont analysis, Balanced Scorecard and my experience as a business owner and working in 100s of organizations, that there are six levers you can pull to improve your business and its value:
- Set your Strategy & Vision
- Build Revenue
- Deliver Profitability
- Support People Performance
- Drive Asset Returns
- Develop Organisation Learning.
Within these levers, there are over 70 factors that you can use to improve your business, its value, and, quite possibly your overall lifestyle.
